There a couple of small museums in San Rafael that are interesting and well worth a visit. But if you're looking for fine art and world class attractions, take the bus to San Francisco where you can spend whole days exploring the city's places of interest.
San Francisco Museums
Not surprisingly for a city of its size and cultural importance, San Francisco has numerous museums and art galleries that cater to a very wide range of tastes and interests.
It is difficult to highlight just a few museums, but the following are the ones that we and our students recommend: Exploratorium, the Museum Of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Asian Art Museum.
The WildCare Center treats injured animals before returning them to their natural environment. The Center has a clinic where animals are treated, and cages where visitors can observe animals and birds recovering. There is also a small exhibit hall, a nature shop and various wildlife displays.
This is an unusual attraction, but one that our students enjoy.
Guide Dogs for the Blind
This is where dogs are raised and trained to assist blind people. Free 45-minute tours are available: they include a trip to the kennels, the campus, the student dormitories, grounds, and gift shop.
Guide Dogs is also an unusual tourist destination, but well worth a visit! It's near near Northgate Mall, only a 5-minute walk from the Student Home.
The Bay Model is three-dimensional hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay. It is capable of simulating tides, currents and river inflows. It was built for scientific purposes but it is open to the public. Well worth a visit!
You can reach the Bay Model easily by bus; it is located at 2100 Bridgeway, Sausalito – about 13 kilometers southeast of San Rafael.
